Thanks for naming this 🙏🏽 Having grown up in the Atlanta area, I can definitely relate to this. I used to go to Java Monkey occasionally and dreamed of being able to perform there someday. I’ve been asking myself a lot of questions about the very things you’re proposing here. It feels like such a big mountain to face, but I know there are those of us whose wheels haven’t started turning yet, in the face of this ♥️
I see you, I hear you sis. I am born & raised in Austin and we are dealing with some of the same gentrification. I fear there will be no spots left that is the Austin I grew up with or spaces for me to showcase my art.
First of all, I LOVE Austin. I grew up in San Antonio so big shoutout to SW TX. Second of all, Austin has some of my favorite tacos and my favorite donut shop in America! I used to go there every year for a conference mainly to eat food. lol And third of all but really FIRST of all, I feel you so heavy on wondering what gentrification in Austin means for spaces where you can showcase your art. I'm trying to stay tuned in to people who are curating new and old spaces here but the grief is REAL. Holding space with you sis. ❤️

SIS. Atlanta be changing. Sometimes I go to a neighborhood I've been to a bunch of times and pull up like...wait...where am I?! This has brought up a lot of questions about defining home and what it means when the place you know as home is changing. Also sidenote about Java...Theresa Davis moved to hosting the Java Speaks Open Mic virtually and still hosts it along with a poetry workshop every Sunday, now for an international community. More info here in case you can virtually make that dream come true 💜: https://www.artisttheresadavis.com/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR17Z_gHFuNv1GFe6FTOD_6ReQvrCaMmDzBYC-u6_hIUhSUFNnonSHRL5vc_aem_AQA-DDIRL3FR14suOZFRTN2WURlAmbffQKdPKBrtdt20q009Hp1gAtGcgUPAxlW78Pjw8ps_a3C4WKJKp6vnUlpM.
