It’s a new year but I’m the same me and that’s a good thing. I don’t need to be a different me this year. Last year was a year of growth and stretching and I want to enjoy who I’m becoming. I was talking with a Black woman artist towards the end of the year and she had just finished an amazing project. I asked her what’s next and she said “nothing yet. I’m basking in it!” That’s my 2025 energy. I’m basking in the ways I’ve been healing and growing, learning to make space for who I am today.
I’m back in the office and I may or may not still be wearing pajama onesies. That’s MY business. I’ve always been a goal-oriented person but over the years I’ve learned to make actual human goals, attainable, reachable, not raising the bar too high and then dragging myself by the knuckles to achieve them. This year, I’m thinking about overall goals, not just professional but personal and fun goals as well.
Goals Just Want to Have Fun
This year I’m making some goals to have fun. One of them is to have some friend vacations: a trip taken mainly to hang out with friends who live in a different city from me. I want to go to a city where my friends live, work remotely while they’re at work and then do regular things with them like grocery store shop, have dinner in, have cheap eats you can only have in their city. MAKE MEMORIES.
As always I’ve got some cooking goals too. I really miss breakfast tacos from my hometown San Antonio so this year I want to make it my goal to learn how to make breakfast tacos myself. Especially bean and cheese, which is my favorite!
Work I Enjoy
I’m also grateful to have a lot of professional projects this year that I enjoy. Here’s what I have on slate for this year:
- Finishing the first draft of my next book, Never Tell a Black Girl How to Black Girl
- Executive producing 2x WNBA Champion and co-owner of the Atlanta Dream, Renee Montgomery’s podcast Montgomery & Co.
- Writing songs as the co-lyricist on the creative team for a musical
- Leading and hosting CreativeMornings ATL, a volunteer-led event series, where I lead a team of more than thirty volunteers
- Launching creativity workshops and community under Live Creatively
- Performing poetry, telling comedic stories, keynote speaking and emceeing at events and shows
Tell me…what are some of your fun goals for this year? What are you working on that you enjoy?
