I’ve heard a lot about brunch. Heard tales of mimosas and how brunch for some people is not a thing you do after church but a thing you do instead of church. I’ve brunched a few times in my life, but mostly in a formal setting. A high-priced hotel brunch for Mother’s Day or an expensive set of eggs and mango mimosas for a friend’s birthday. But I have never been a consistent brunch goer.
When I stayed out late for a party, we would fall through a Waffle House, an IHOP, or R. Thomas in Atlanta if we had a healthy-eating friend in our midst. But this late night/early morning breakfast had to happen immediately after we left the party or the club. There was no way I could go home to crash and then make it back out for brunch.
In the last year or two, my friends and I have started gathering on Saturday or Sunday mornings, especially if a few of us want to get together and there’s more availability on the weekend. We said “let’s meet for brunch” but all of the good brunch places do not take reservations. We didn’t feel like waiting so we agreed to meet there at 9 or 9:30am. I did this a few times until I was meeting with a friend for brunch and she said “let’s meet at 11” and I said “That’s too late.” And she said, “for brunch?”
And then I realized. I don’t want to go to brunch anymore. Especially brunch in Atlanta where eggs come with a side of a loud DJ and hookah smoke. Sometimes the brunch spots in my city are more vibes than delicious breakfast. And I don’t want vibes or grass walls or a DJ with my eggs. I want a delicious breakfast, a good biscuit, a sweet and consistent pancake. I don’t want to show up to brunch and wait an hour for a table. It’s official. I am no longer a brunch girl. It’s breakfast for me. Going to a popular brunch spot around 9:30 or 10 am means I can eat my French toast in peace without having to Bankhead Bounce or Swag Surf. I can actually hear the updates my friends tell me about their lives. By the time the DJ and hookah crowd shows up, I can be pleasantly full and back at home braless and watching the TV shows I’ve missed.
So tell me, which one are you: breakfast or brunch?
